Description

I’ve always been enamoured with the nautilus, they’re almost too majestic to be real. This illustration is of the chambered nautilus (Nautilus pompilius) is a mollusc of the open ocean, ‘nautilus’ meaning ‘sailor’ in Latin. I find it incredibly fascinating that this species has hardly evolved at all in the last 500 million years, it is truly one of resilience. Not only that, it’s physical appearance is so intriguing; the large eye, leathery ‘hood’, long ‘cirri’ (those tentacle looking things) and such a superb outer shell. I felt very much compelled to recreate it in my particular style, combining ink pen with watercolour and a few splats here and there. It’s one of my favourite pieces in my collection.
